In 1973, I took a leap of faith and opened “Mary’s Beauty Boutique” as a young woman in Southgate, Michigan. Two years later, I fell in love and married Gary Rushlow and we began a new joint venture, Headway Salon in Southgate.
For more than 30 fun-filled years, Gary and I owned and operated Headway while raising our children.
In 2007, the salon relocated, rebranded and expanded our thriving family business, adding spa services to become “Daybreak Salon and Spa” in Woodhaven, Michigan.
And our tradition of creating a home for highly talented, professional experts who greet and treat each client as a valued guest grew its Downriver presence with a legacy of award-winning services year after year continued until today.
For more than 50 years, our family has been an high achieving member of Michigan’s hair styling and fashion industry and has earned national accolades too.
We are one of the longest running AVEDA salons in its history, a Salon Today Top 200 winner, many times over, voted Downriver’s #1 beauty bar, spa and nail salon, Best of Trenton and so many more.
But beyond the awards, I am most proud of this team, this family of stylists, technicians, therapists and the friendships we’ve created with our clients.
Together, we serve a mission and heritage to care for the world we live in, from the products we use to the ways in which we give back and to strive to set an example for leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but throughout our community.
As I watch my young girl’s dream, grow beyond my wildest dreams under our daughter, Jenee’s leadership, I see a beautiful new future on the horizon.
